Organizing your closet when you are putting your home on the market is a key selling point for potential buyers. The last thing a potential buyer wants to question while touring your home is if there is enough space for all their things.

I know it can get very overwhelming to sell a home, with the showings, all your personal belongings in the home, and the decluttering process. Don’t make the common mistake of throwing all of your stuff in boxes and dealing with it in your new home. That not only delays the inevitable, but it will also cost you more time and money in the long term; paying movers to load, move, and unload items you possibly don’t want or need is a BIG NO NO!!

How Do Your Closets Look?

#1 | Clear the floor

Pick up everything off the floor. The clearer space buyers see, the more likely they can see their things in that space. Shoe clutter is one of the hardest types of clutter to get under control, so it is important to pick a shoe organizer that best fits your needs. A simple shoe organizer can get shoes off the floor and display them on a shelf. Another great option for shoe storage is this clear shoe bin that can be stored on the top shelf of  your closet, clearing the floor.

Use a double hanging rod to create more hanging space for tops and bottoms. A lot of builder grade closets have the standard 1-rod closet that leaves very little space for optimal space and storage.

#2 | Purge damaged and poor-fitting clothing

Stop holding on to clothes that are damaged, stained or no longer fit. If you haven’t taken these items to get altered in the last 6 months, the likelihood that you will take them now, mid-move, is even less likely, so just get rid of them. Another great tip to get you going is to store a basket in your closet, and any time you find something that doesn’t fit or is no longer your style, just put it into the basket and fill it up. Once it’s full, drop it off at your local donation site. As always, follow the “One in, one out” rule. If you purchase something new, donate something old.

#3 | Store off-season clothing

The best way to make space in your closet is to store off-season clothing in clear bins. Clear bins are ideal for this habit as you can easily identify these items later. When you put off-season clothes in storage, ask yourself if you have ever actually worn it, and make sure you still like the way it fits. We have already gone over what to do with clothes that don’t fit and/or are not being worn.

#4 | Use vertical space

Command hooks are our friends. Instead of putting more holes in the walls of the home you’re selling, use command hooks. These hooks are amazing for vertical storage, and the best part is they don’t damage your walls and they’re completely removable. The most overlooked vertical space is normally behind closet doors. Another great inexpensive multi use vertical storage solution is an over the door shoe organizer. I like to use them in kids’ rooms for arts and craft supplies and their accessories, as well as in bathrooms for extra toiletries.

hangers

#5 | Match your hangers

Matching your hangers allows for a clean, streamlined look in your closet. You have heard of curb appeal, but don’t forget about closet appeal. I personally like velvet hangers because they are slim and they keep clothes nicely in shape. The slim size makes the closet space appear more open and less cluttered, while the uniform shape of the matching hangers makes for a more streamlined closet. Matching hangers give an overall polished, picture perfect, look.

It may take a little extra elbow grease and you may have to finally let go of that concert tee from 1996 but I promise, small changes to your closets will yield big results in the sale of your home.

Best wishes for a successful sale  and STAY ORGANIZED!
