‘Tis the season for getting organized!

“It’s the most wonderful time of the year”  but also the most stressful.  Here are some tips to keep you from feeling overwhelmed.

1. Make a to-do list early on, and check it twice to make sure you don’t forget any important details.

2. Take care of responsibilities consecutively at the beginning of the month, and not last minute. If you have to make doctor appointments, try to schedule them a month in advance. Now is also a good time to request a copy a payment log for tax records.

3. Resist over-buying when it comes to decor. Pull out decorations before heading to the store and make your list of anything you need to replace. Donate anything that is damaged.

4. Pass along any decor that your adult child/ren or grandchilden may appreciate in their home—write a special note about the item and share the love.  A great example of this would be handmade ornaments, crafts or family heirlooms.  When your newlywed child has their first Christmas in their home they will have free holiday decorations and memories to share.

5. Set a holiday budget.  Don’t go into debt buying gifts.  Shoppers int he U.S racked up an average of $1,054 of debt last Christmas season- an increase of 5% over the previous year, according to a survey from Magnify Money, a personal finance website.

6. Get essentials out of the way by securing a guest list or holiday plans. A google calendar or Evite is a good way of keeping track of guests and who’s bringing what dish or item.

7. Plan holiday dinner ahead of time by making a list, and order anything you feel will take up too much of your time on the special day. There are several companies that offer delivery like Instacart for Publix, Costco, or Whole Foods. Use Organized Chicks link for $10 off your first order.

8. As you find and add Holiday recipes to your favorites; print them out and put them in a binder for a collection to add to every winter. Put your saves into a binder and once full, you’ll have a handmade recipe book to share with family and friends. (Refer to tip #9.)

9. Give from your heart not your pockets. A memory well-made is far more valuable than anything you can buy. This is a great time to get creative and write a meaningful letter, poem, or create an experience that will be cherished.

10. Create a keepsake box.   If you already have children, one of these filing boxes are overdue in your home. This is the season you will receive even more meaningful keepsakes, so why not have a home for that stuff that is tidy and out of the way.

Remember to have fun with these things and don’t take the planning too seriously. Nothing is perfect, but having your close one’s around is what will make this holiday successful nevertheless!
