Are You Organized? Our Tips To Help Prepare For The Holidays

It’s just a few days before Halloween and time for a fright! The Christmas season seems to start 15 minutes after the last kid comes to your door on Halloween. Call it “ThanksChristmas” or whatever but it’s time for the rush of the seasons all jammed together at the end of the year. Parties & get-togethers are around the corner! Is your home ready for all the traffic? It’s time to get organized!

To prepare for it all, the staff here at The Organized Chick has put together a quick list to help you get organized for the holidays. Our goal is to help things go smoothly and help reduce the stress of the season.

Here is our list of things to do to get organized for the holiday season:

Clean Out Your Pantry

First, open the pantry door and take a deep breath. Take an inventory of what you have and get rid of anything that has expired. Make a list of holiday must-haves and review your favorite recipes for the season.

Replace broken appliances or the chipped mug in the back of the cabinet.

Organize Your Garage

If you are not parking in your garage, now is a good time to make some room before it gets cold out. Your spouse will definitely appreciate it!

Trash anything that is broken. We’re firm believers in using Rubbermaid containers to store away items that are off-season – beach or camping (swag, crap, stuff). These things can be put away to make room for fall/winter stuff that you’ll actually need.

The garage is the perfect place to use vertical space- chrome adjustable bins and hooks do wonders to save space and keep things tidy. If you don’t have a mudroom, adding a small shoe rack by the door of your garage is great for rain boots or dirty shoes.

Organize Your Coat Closet

Your coat closet is about to see a lot more traffic during the holidays. It’s the perfect time to check to see if what’s in there still fits and looks good. Fashions change and kids grow out of coats, so it’s time to see who needs what. Take advantage of early sales while there’s still time. Donate any coats that you don’t need to a local shelter, Goodwill, Salvation Army or local coat drive.

Prepare Your Guest Room

We’ve all done it. We’ve all used our guest bedroom as a dumping ground for things that didn’t have a home for the moment. Now is the time to put these things where they belong. Each item needs to be sorted by the general category- clothes, décor, housewares, etc. Donate anything that is no longer wanted or useful. Toss any item that is broken, stained or worn out.

Last but not least, store items you’re keeping into bins, boxes or containers, this will vary based on preference and needs or ascetics of the room.

Swap Seasons In Your Closet

Depending on the space in your closet, go through and store any off-season clothes in bins and boxes. Use the top shelves to store these unneeded items. As you are storing clothes that are out of season, get rid of any clothes that have rips, stains and not salvageable. Put open toe shoes away in clear shoe bins and bring out your boots. While you’re organizing your closet, it’s a great time to match your gloves rather than wait until you need them and can’t find any matching pairs. Make sure you still fit into your favorite cocktail dress and have your ugly Christmas sweater ready for any last-minute holiday parties.
